Region 3 - 2012 CALL FOR SPEAKERS

For more information about this - Click Here

President's Corner

In case you haven’t noticed, there are some changes happening within the Fort Worth Chapter.  Your Executive Committee is working hard to get us moving again.  I would like to fill you in on just a few of the happenings.

We have started the year off with a bang in regards to Chapter meetings. So far this year we have jointly sponsored an OSHA Update with OSHA, AIHA and the Southwest Chapter. We had our own private OSHA update with a representative from the Fort Worth Area Office.  We have seen the latest in regards to DOT and fleet transportation safety. And just this week, we had a great meeting hosted by the UTA Region VI OSHA Training Center.  Thanks to Darren Alexander for putting these together for us and to Sean Nelson for his reminders. Look for the remainder of the year’s meeting topics to be published shortly.

Our December meeting will be at the Texas Star Golf Course on the evening of December 9th. It will feature two Past ASSE Society Presidents discussing what’s happening within the Society, ASSE’s new Body of Knowledge portal, lesson from Santa on safety leadership and much more. We will also use this venue to host our annual toy drive. And as a special present to you the Fort Worth membership, Santa will give away one free registration to the upcoming 2012 Region III PDC to be held next August to a Chapter member. Eligibility for the present is very simple, come to the meeting and bring an unwrapped toy (to benefit Scottish Rite Hospital). See the Chapter web site for details.
Our Chapter By Laws are in need of an update. Your Executive Committee is working on revisions and should have these to you for comments and approval very shortly.

Some of you received and completed a recent member survey. We have received the results this week and will be working to address items brought out in the survey. Stay tuned as we will be sharing more on this in the President’s Corner and on the Chapter web site.

The 2012 Region III PDC will be in our own back yard. It will be held August 6-8 at the Hurst Conference Center, Hurst Texas. As one of the host Chapters we will be looking for sponsors, volunteers and presenters. Please mark your calendars and put some money in next year’s budget for this event.  If you would like to help in any way, please let us know. More to come as we get additional details.

As we move forward, if you have an idea or comment, please let us hear from you.  Send me an email – skipper.kendrick@gmail.com or give me a call (817) 428-3270 (office) or (817) 300-7233 (mobile).

‘till next time.

Intern Sponsorship Request - Mickey Leland Environmental

On behalf of the Mickey Leland Advisory Committee, I am pleased to invite you and your organization to participate in the 2012 Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP). Celebrating its 20th anniversary. MLEIP is a paid, full-time summer internship program that has placed almost 1,500 students in public sector and private industry internship assignments since its inception. Administered by the Texas Commission on Environment Quality (TCEQ). MLEIP honors the late U.S. Congressman Mickey Leland, who worked to increase minority participation in the protection of public health and in addressing environmental issues.

MLEIP provides minorities, women, and economically disadvantaged students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in science, environmental studies, engineering, public health, public administration, business, computer science, and law with the opportunity for professinal development and hands-on learning. Specific internship assingments are made in consideration of the student's knowledge, skills, and abilities, and in accordance with the qualifications requested by the manager of supervisor. Private sector employers determine the rate of pay for MLEIP interns selected by their organization.

Employers interested in sponsoring an inter may complete and submit an online Sponsor Request Form at http://www.tceq.state.tx.us/mleland/sponsor/

For more information about the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP) including eligibility requirements, students application package guidelines, and deadlines, please visit our website at http://www.tceq.texas.gov/adminservices/employ/mickeyleland/index.html

ASSE Rolls Out Body of Knowledge

ASSE's Body of Knowledge (BOK) builds upon the success of many resources, including The Safety Professionals Handbook - ASSE's major 2-volume reference set on the profession - and makes them available in a searchable, interactive database. Dozens of contributors including writers, editors, and peer reviewers are currently updating and enhancing the ASSE body of knowledge. The BOK project is ongoing, and the Society is looking forward to your contributions as an SH&E practitioner as well. Visit the BOK here: http://www.safetybok.org/.

Update Your Contact Information

Please make sure you update your contact information with the National Site (asse.org). You can log in using your member number and last name, unless you’ve changed it.  Because we have new members coming in regularly, after the first of the year, I will begin using this list for distribution.  If there is some reason why you do not want your e-mail updated with National or you cannot do so, please let me know to continue receiving Chapter updates and information.  I am also changing my e-mail address after the first of the year (you can use now as well) to my personal account.  Please send any correspondence to this address: seann17@live.com.  Regards, Sean

Communication Update

We are working on ways to improve communication within the Chapter.  I try to provide everyone with the information as I receive it and hold on to some for a day or so to compile it together and keep from sending too many e-mails during the week.  I would like to be able to send out a weekly “Newsline” to include announcements, reminders, and jobs – probably on Friday’s.  I’ll begin a trial of this in the next couple of weeks to see how it goes – maybe putting it into a newsletter format, consistent each week.  We have also discussed the use of other communication avenues such as Facebook and LinkedIn and may have something ready in the next month.  Lastly, we discussed methods for getting training sessions/meetings out to you with venues such as web or Office Live Meetings where many of you can join that normally wouldn’t be able to make it in person.  I’m looking for feedback/input on any of these areas and any help is appreciated.  If you’d like to volunteer to head up one of these projects or host a Live Meeting, please let me know.

Region III PDC (2012)

The Region Professional Development Conference next year will be held locally at the Hurst Conference Center (Hurst, TX) on August 6-8, 2012.  Sponsorship is greatly needed at this point, so if your company is close to budget time (or not), consider sponsorship at any level and get your company name in lights (well, maybe in print anyway).  A call for speakers will come out soon and there is a good list of technical tours on plan for the event.  Obviously, this is early in the planning phase, but planning is a part of being prepared and successful, right?!  Any support you can provide should be communicated with Skipper Kendrick at skipper.kendrick@gmail.com.

Fort Worth Chapter Elections (2012)

We are currently soliciting volunteers to participate with the chapter and take a role on the board in 2012.  Nominations will begin now and into November with elections to be conducted in March.  Officers take their positions on July 1 for a one year term.  Elected positions include President, Vice President (President-elect), Treasurer, and Secretary.  As we work to make our chapter better each year, your participation (which is very minimal) is a key factor to success.

Safety Professional Of The Year Award

Safety Professional of the Year – nominating a member of our chapter for safety professional of the year was discussed during the last meeting.  Information of “the chosen one” will be sent to Region and potentially National for selection at those levels as well.  To be considered, the person must be nominated by a peer.  The nomination must demonstrate what the individual has done for the chapter as well as for the profession.
